YOUTH TRAINING
Benefits of Youth Training
The most important aspect of training our youth should be Safety. The International Journal of Sports Medicine has found that most injuries sustained by our youth are due to "errors in basic motion activities like running, jumping, and catching." All of these activities are considered complex motor tasks which are difficult to sustain for long periods of time, even by some adults.
Children that don't have a general strength-endurance base are not able to support long duration exercise and should follow more of an anaerobic approach to training. Anaerobic training focuses more on proper technique that is administered in small doses as opposed to all at once. Exercise repetitions last a matter of seconds rather than minutes. This type of training helps the young athlete to remember perfect form during each movement rather than learning how to compensate when their muscles get tired.
Training our youth should focus more on the "athletic" approach where the focus is on quality rather than quantity, which relies on improving running mechanics, coordination, balance, stability, and overall conditioning. Being efficient in these areas helps to decrease the chance of injury, increases joint integrity, and improves the functional development that contributes to helping the child understand proper training progressions as they mature.
